What to Know Before Adopting a 'Pet'?

We’ve collected our answers to the most common questions about translation and interpreting services. In our translation services faq, you will find information about schedules, rates, our process, and more.

The Kennebec Valley Humane Society needs volunteers on a daily basis to assist with a variety of tasks. KVHS would not exist without the help of our generous and dedicated volunteers. Can you picture yourself walking dogs? Socializing with a cat? Maybe dishes and laundry is your cup of tea? Additional help is needed on a daily basis with cat kennel cleaning and feeding and working with animals at our satellite locations. Aside from animal care there is much more to running an animal shelter. We can also use assistance with fundraising and special events.

At the KVHS it is our goal to see companion animals and their owners together for a lifetime. Sadly, due to life’s circumstances, this goal is not always attainable. If you find yourself needing to surrender your pet the KVHS is here for you. Here at the KVHS we realize that surrendering a pet can be a difficult and heartbreaking decision. Accepting surrendered animals and working to place them in new and loving homes is an important part of our mission.

KVHS manages our intake of animals, especially when we are busy and full, by scheduling appointments to take in your pet. We will not shame or judge you, but only want to gather as much information as possible about your pet so we can set them up for success with a new family when that time comes.

We encourage previous owners to fill out a pet profile. This background information is helpful when perspective adopters inquire about your pet’s personality.

Remember animal abandonment is a preventable crime! If you need to surrender an animal contact the KHVS, we are here to help.

Did you know you can include KVHS in your estate plans either through your will, trust, retirement or life insurance plans, or bank accounts?

  • Including us with a gift in your will or revocable trust
  • A life-income gift that names KVHS as a remainder beneficiary, such as a charitable remainder trust, or a charitable gift annuity
  • A gift or assignment of qualified retirement plan assets, such as an IRA, 401(k) or 403(b)
  • A gift of life insurance
  • As a beneficiary of a bank account
We love it when our friends in the community host their own fundraisers!

We have such a great community here in Kennebec Valley Maine!  We receive donations from several independent fundraisers each year and every time it makes us feel so loved. Animal lovers of all ages take it upon themselves to raise money to help homeless animals in our community and we just love it.

What do I do if my beloved pet becomes lost?

Click HERE to see some recent stray arrivals. If you do not see your lost cat here please contact us with details about your missing cat so we can check our intakes and file a lost report if your cat has not come into us. We can be reached by phone at 207-626-3491, by email at customerservice@pethavenlane.org, or via private message here on Facebook.

Contact the KVHS and fill out a lost report. A trained staff member will ask you a series of questions that will help the KVHS identify your pet if it is surrendered to the shelter by an Animal Control Officer or another individual.

It is always a good idea to have identification on your pet in case you and your animal become separated. Identification allows the KVHS to quickly and successfully reunite animals with their loved ones.
